i used coldpress watercolor paper right off the pad (strathmore, i believe). i plan the painting in pencil directly on the paper, then cover everything with matte medium (or gel medium, basically anything that's clear). after that i paint in oils.
to my understanding, there's no such thing as special anything when working with oils (panel, paper, wood, canvas, etc). oil will rot whatever surface you put it on if you don't first protect it.
Hah ! Too true about the rot. Which is why I always stored my guns with the gunstock pointing up.
I use gesso that has been very diluted as when laid down, it turns out transparent. That is called the imprimatura layer. I will try your medium way soon.
I thing scratch paper would not need preparation: it has a layer of plaster on it.
Do you prepare your paper before painting (gesso, varnish, anything...) ?
...or is it some special paper ?
